Thanks for listening, everyone.
Okay, actually, we’ve been back – I just haven’t gotten around to pointing that out here yet.
Long story short, last fall Craig came out to California for grad school, and Serious DJs has been playing a happy hour in San Francisco monthly, with Tim “Tones” Jones and his Sockpuppet Soundsystem. (We keep meaning to announce when we’re doing these gigs, since it’s a weekly and we’re not there every week, but we usually only have a week’s notice or so. We also keep forgetting to record our sets.)
At any rate, we’ve got some exciting plans, and we’re working on a new top-secret studio mix. Until that’s ready, here’s a mix we never properly posted.
Last summer, Alex made a surprise trip back to DC to wish me well on my birthday, and to distract me while others set up a surprise party, we did this mix. The best part is unquestionably the blend at the end – we could not stop laughing every time the chorus dropped.
Enjoy, and keep checking back (or stay on that RSS) for more soon!

As previously mentioned, I was the guest at Beat Research for August 6. Due to a shortage of DJs I got to do two sets, and I had the foresight to record both of them. Wayne is a terrific host, and the people at the Enormous Room are also nice, so a good time was had by all (at least by the standards of a hot/muggy summertime Monday).
The first set jumps all over the map, starting with some screw (Wayne asked for it; how could I not oblige?) and dubstep before finishing with some dancefloor-friendly tracks.

The second set starts with a few of my favorite soca tracks, and ends with a bunch of classic ragga jungle. It’s also shorter, and better mixed than the first set.

I’d hoped this announcement would be about a one night only SDJs reunion, but well, the man’s not exactly giving away cross country plane tickets these days.
At any rate, Craig (that’s me!) will be DJing solo at Beat Research on August 6th. Alex usually holds me back a little when we play together, so expect to hear some wacky stuff.
I’ll repeat – if you’re in the Boston/Cambridge area on August 6th, come out to the Enormous Room and catch me playing records and maybe making a fool of myself. If you’re not in the area, I’ll try to record it and get it up here, but we all know that live is better.
Oh and for anyone who saw us at Beat Research last summer, I won’t play any screw this time. Unless you ask.

Over a year since I promised it, here it is: the second volume in the Serious DJs chopped & screwed mix series. With more hyphy than the first time, and weird stuff Alex would never have let me play, pop your bottles to this and remember to get throwed responsibly.

Bittersweet: a hot new mix, and some somewhat sad news (for you, at least). First, the mix.

We got together to do this mix, had a couple beers, and decided to pull out all the stops. There’s rap bangers, club jams, you name it. It gets a little sloppy towards the end, but you know what? Fuck it.

Now, the news. Alex is moving to San Francisco, and I’m staying here in DC. What this means for Serious DJs is not that we’re breaking up, but we are going to be on an extended hiatus of a sort. Hopefully over the summer I’ll go visit and we’ll throw down like old times.
As for the future, I’m going to keep on keepin’ on. Expect to continue seeing solo mixes from me here, and additionally, check out my new netlabel, Melt Records.
Alex says:
It’s true: work is taking me across the country, and I’m going to miss mixing like it’s an old friend (not to mention missing my old friends). I make no guarantees about doing solo mixes but I’m hoping to find the time. I’ll be scouting out locations for Craig and I to DJ in SF, so hopefully it won’t be too long before we’ve got some live sessions up here. Believe!
So that’s it for now! I feel like we’ve had a pretty good run, and while I’m going to miss Alex, I know he’s moving on to some good shit on the west side, so it’s all good.
Just wanted to note: Serious DJs affiliate Tones recently put up a hot mix of slightly glitchy mellow hip hop, and if that sounds like your thing, you should cop it.
Serious DJs endorsed!
Because I’m on spring break, here’s a mix of hard shit. Also I really wanted to end the last mix we did with this At the Drive-In song, but forgot, so it’s at the end here. Enjoy!

Yeah, we’re slack. Sorry. Decided to throw down on a mix randomly last night, and Alex came prepared with some club beats. He also came with some work distractions, so Craig stealthily stole the mix towards the end. And then we got bored of the last song.
Some of the songs in this mix are kinda pervy. If that bothers you, maybe you should not listen to it? Or just skip those parts? It’s mostly that last song.
Also DJ C gives us a shoutout in this mix.

It’s been too long, we know.
After our summer mini-tour we kinda went into musical hiding. Alex all but stopped listening to music, preferring instead to tap out primitive rhythms in time with falling rainwater. Craig forgot how to whistle for a couple days there. Shit was dire.
But we’re back, right about at the one year mark from when we started doing this DJ duo business. To celebrate, we’re bringing you this bundle of bassy joy. Share the love and stay tuned for another year of free mixes.

It’s been bugging me for a while that we haven’t done a new mix for a couple months, and Alex and I have been pretty busy, so I decided I’d make time – I got up early today. I’d had some vague plans to explore some of the crossovers between screw, dubstep, and trip-hop, but probably could’ve done better about that. Neat stuff happens, though!

oh and if you don’t like this mix, I should be clear that Alex had nothing to do with it, so the blame is totally mine. Not that there’s any reason you shouldn’t like it?
EDIT: Live was being screwy this morning, so if you downloaded this earlier, you should maybe wait until 11pm EST and try it again. There’s some minor glitches (mostly you won’t get to hear much of that Enduser track). Sorry!
You may have noticed that the second track in the NYC set is by me. I’ve made it available, on my personal site as a nice high quality (dj-friendly) mp3. It’ll be available to download for a week or so, so get on it if you’re feeling it:
Edit, 12/6/06: How completely embarassing. Don’t know how I didn’t see that comment below until just now – the file’s been jacked up for months and I had no idea. I’ve fixed it, and tested the new one – it’s as it ought to be (although the broken version did sound kind of like some noise projects I’ve done). My apologies to anyone who wanted it and didn’t get it – now you can! Plus I’m leaving it up pretty much for good, so that bit about “for a week or so” no longer applies. Enjoy! Post comments if you like it (and this time I’ll actually read them).
And here’s us at Broklyn Beats’ Pure Fire night. While we were setting up, Criterion threw on a DJ Michael Watts mix, so you know we had to put it on some chopped and screwed business. If you’re not into screw, don’t worry, we did a bunch of other stuff too – see especially the Konono No. 1 / Dead Prez mash.

Here’s the recording of our set at Energy2 in Providence, RI. I thought it was more of a traditional “dance music” night, so we started off with a bunch of drum n bass and went from there.

Here are all of the details for our upcoming Northeast tour!
Monday, Aug. 14th – Beat Research, Cambridge, MA. At the Enormous Room. 21+; more info at beatresearch.com.
Tuesday, Aug. 15th – Energy2, Providence, RI. More info at volumeproductions.com.
Wednesday, Aug. 16th – Pure Fire, New York City, NY. At Tonic. More info at broklynbeats.net and tonicnyc.com.
I am not ashamed to admit that this will be our first time touring, and we probably don’t entirely know what we’ve gotten ourselves into, but it should be mad fun. Come out and get drunk and dance (if you live in or around one of those three cities)!
Also, we’ve decided to make the entire tour (and my subsequent vacation) carbon neutral. Carbonfund.org has sold us carbon credits to offset all of our CO2 emissions for the driving from DC. So our liberal guilt is sated, and yours should be too.
Lastly, we’ve got a special exclusive mix cd that you’ll only be able to get from us in person, which we’ll be taking with us on the road. Copies are crazy limited, so if you want one, you might want to hustle. Is it a good mix? You’ll never know if you don’t come see us.
If you live in the DC/VA/MD area, you should take note: Serious DJs will be playing at the “Strictly Locals” night at Strangeland Records. Strangeland’s a nice new independent record shop run by nice folks. And we’re also nice folks. So you should come check it out.
We’ll be there July 8th, starting at 8pm. Directions can be found here.

Chris H. is probably going to be pissed at us. We started out on some dubstep, and then played some, uh, other things – I guess I got bored. If you don’t like dubstep, things get weird around the 35 minute mark or so. Enjoy!
PS – Sorry for no links in the tracklist – I’ve been drinking. Google if you need to.
PPS – Truth is, I got new speakers and a subwoofer, and we wanted to play bassy shit. My neighbors are probably more pissed than Chris is going to be, actually.

Dirty digital hip-hop to crisp crunk and back again, all while papaya cupcakes bake in the other room. It’s a Serious summer mix, getting hot jams all up next to some shit you haven’t even heard yet. We’ve been holding off on releasing a mix from our practice sessions for weeks but we had to bring this to you. Enjoy with or without baked goods.

It was odd weather for Spring when we got together this weekend intending to make a very different mix. Maybe it was the cold, or the gray, but we ended up on some moody, introspective shit for the first half before picking it up with some ragga-tinged jungle. Not what we set out to make, but hopefully you’ll agree that it’s the perfect head-nodding soundtrack to late afternoon space-outs.

Sorry for no mixes lately; we’ve been ill, and we’re both about to go out of town. When we’re back, though, expect something sick.

In the meantime, here’s a blast from the past. I did this mix almost two years ago, well before I knew what I was doing. It was mostly an attempt at doing some live remixing and beat-chopping, and it failed for being a little over-ambitious given my lack of experience. That said, I don’t think it’s too bad. Assuming you really, really like the amen.

Also thanks to everyone who’s been downloading the mixes; that’s really cool. Though I noticed that some folks seem to be sleeping on We get paid to Screw, Vol. 1. You better get with it, because Volume Two’s coming sooner than you know.

We needed to put together a promo mix. The sun was shining this past Saturday, and we were in a quirky disco mood. This brief, funky collection is the result. More fun than an afternoon quicky!

What do we know about purple drank? Precious little. What do we know about DJ Screw? Mostly that he taught the world that hip-hop sounds really good slowed way down and chopped. In the style of the departed master we present a mix of stoopid slow rap and indie-hop.

Jungle’s not dead. It just needs a little variety, a little spicing up. This mix jumps between new tracks and back-of-the-digital-crate classics, throwing in some unexpected sounds along the way.
